Saving Time, Money, and Trees with Mobile Patient Registration

To speed up registration and help more patients register at once without purchasing additional workstations and kiosks, Lee Health implemented Epic’s Welcome and other registration activities on affordable tablets for registration clerks to use in the ED and for patients to use in registration offices. In about a year, patients used the registration tablets to sign 1,378,485 documents, saving 4,278,000 pages or 387 trees.
Registration clerks use the tablets to register patients and collect patient signatures in tight spaces in the ED and on inpatient floors. Without needing to wheel around a large workstation, the registration clerks have more mobility, which is especially helpful when the ED is at capacity during busy seasons.
The addition of tablets with Epic’s Welcome application in registration offices lets more patients register themselves without waiting in line at the front desk. Because tablets cost less and take up less space than kiosks, Lee Health was able to add 142 Welcome tablets to their registration offices in addition to several Welcome kiosks already in use, improving check-in times. From the tablets, patients can sign documents, sign up for MyChart, verify their demographics and contacts, and take their own photo for their patient records.
Patients can also check in up to seven days before their scheduled appointment using MyChart on the Lee Health mobile app on their smartphones. During early check-in, they can update their personal information, sign documents, and submit payment information.
