Project Joy Helps Nurses Reclaim Time at the Bedside

To help nurses navigate the EHR more efficiently and give them more time at the bedside, UCHealth, headquartered in Aurora, Colorado, embarked on Project Joy, a multi-year project to optimize nursing documentation across the organization. By conducting a comprehensive review of documentation requirements, the team reduced required nursing documentation for the average patient by more than half and significantly reduced the amount of time and number of actions needed to complete that documentation.

How They Did It:

• Created a team of nurses to identify unnecessary documentation
• Worked with informaticists to show flowsheets only when necessary
• Reviewed proposed changes with all organizational stakeholders
• Measured outcomes using EHR tools and qualitative assessments
• Created processes for nurses to suggest future documentation improvements
