Patient Estimates in MyChart Take the Surprise out of Medical Bills
UCHealth in Colorado is one of the first organizations in the United States to offer price estimates through MyChart, allowing patients to see what they’ll owe before they receive treatment. Since last August, UCHealth patients have generated over 700 estimates in MyChart. UCHealth currently provides estimates for 238 different services and will be live on more than 300 in May 2019.
“We want to get to the point where patients can have absolute confidence in what they’ll owe,” said Melissa Greer, UCHealth vice president of revenue cycle. “There’s no sticker shock, no surprise bills.”
In MyChart, patients select the procedure they need and enter their insurance information. Epic calculates an estimate based on the median cost for that procedure over the past six months and shows patients what they should expect to pay, taking into account the amount their insurance will cover.
