Nemours Children’s Health Connects to School Students with Telehealth

Doctors partner with school nurses to care for students with special needs

The extensive telehealth platform at Nemours Children’s now connects a school for children with special needs directly to doctors at Nemours. Parents can also join in virtually, which means that parents don’t have to leave work or pull their kids out of school to see a doctor.

“Coordination is very important,” says Dr. Shayan Vyas, who oversees Nemours’ Florida telehealth operations. The patients’ telehealth encounters and diagnoses are added to their Epic record and sent to their primary care provider. “We want to make sure we’re not interrupting the existing medical home.”

In addition, prescriptions ordered during the visit can be delivered directly to the school from the pharmacy across the street before the school day ends. “Not only is the child getting a diagnosis,” Vyas says, “but in some cases the treatments are already starting.”
