MD Anderson’s In-Hospital Hair Salon for Cancer Patients

“Every patient is beautiful,” says cosmetologist Justine Joseph

One of the most symbolic moments of chemotherapy is when patients start to lose their hair, but at MD Anderson Cancer Center, one hair stylist is working to help patients take ownership of this moment and remember that they are beautiful.

Justine Joseph, a full-time cosmetologist at MD Anderson’s in-hospital hair salon, takes care of about two to three patients every hour. Whether they need a full shave or just some help washing their hair around bandages and wounds, Justine makes sure to share positive reinforcement and encouragement with each patient.

“I want them to have confidence and know that they’re beautiful, no matter how they look on the outside,” she says. “And I think that’s what people really have to start saying to themselves: I’m beautiful.”
