Managing a Daughter’s Chronic Illness with MyChart

MyChart lets caregivers track loved ones’ appointments and results across multiple organizations

Patti Dillabough’s daughter sees nine “-ologists” on a regular basis to care for chronic respiratory and other issues. She used to lug around 13 binders full of medical information from appointment to appointment and dutifully log new data in spreadsheets.

Staff at The Ottawa Hospital suggested Patti sign up for MyChart. She did, and as her daughter’s caregiver, she uses MyChart’s proxy access feature to view her daughter’s medical record. She hasn’t needed the binders since.

“As a caregiver, it’s fantastic,” Patti said. “You literally have everything at your fingertips. You can be responsible for your own care, or in this case, for her care.”

Patti’s daughter, Paige, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor when she was eight years old. Paige faced complications after surgery and an aggressive run of chemotherapy and radiation. She will continue to need care for the rest of her life.

Fifteen years later, Patti uses MyChart to track her daughter’s care and review test results.

“We don’t have to wait until we have a next appointment to see the results,” she said. “It’s really huge. I would highly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to get on MyChart because it really gives you the control of your own health care and the care of your loved ones.”
