ACE-ing Childhood Trauma Screening with Digital Questionnaires

Loma Linda University Medical Center serves a large demographic area covering around 27,000 square miles, including many neighborhoods ranked very low on the Child Opportunity Index. They recognized the need to screen for adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and to do it well and affordably. This led it to create a digital process that increased screening for ACEs by an estimate of at least 50%, connecting more patients with resources and boosting organizational revenue. By integrating the PEARLS questionnaire into this screening, Loma Linda meets California’s Proposition 56 requirements and receives incentive payments. The organization’s clearly defined referral process and staff’s training in trauma-informed care ensures that the patients who are found to be at risk are connected with the resources they need.
