Life Sciences
Epic brings together clinical care, research, advanced diagnostics, and medical devices to help health systems bring precision medicine to the point of care and advance medical knowledge.
Research
Epic integrates clinical care and research by giving researchers the ability to explore study feasibility, organize studies, recruit participants, collect consents, track patient-reported outcomes, and more. Patients use MyChart to indicate interest in participating in research. Researchers from participating organizations have access to Cosmos, a large, deidentified, representative dataset.

Clinical Trials
Discovery, Epic’s life sciences platform, builds on the research toolset. It helps clinical trials reach a larger and more representative population, reduces friction at study start up and in sharing trial-specific evidence with sponsors, and speeds up access to cutting edge care for patients who qualify for investigational treatments.

Specialty Diagnostics
Epic brings precision medicine to the point of care by giving providers the ability to place orders for genetic tests and receive discrete results via the Aura network, all within their workflow rather than just in a PDF. Companies that provide specialty diagnostic testing use Epic to receive orders from providers and send back discrete results via the Aura network.

Medical Device Manufacturers
Orders for medical devices, such as cardiac monitors, are sent to device manufacturers over the Aura network—no need for point-to-point interfaces. Readings from the devices flow directly into Epic, giving providers a real-time view of patients’ vital signs.

Surgical Implant Manufacturers
Healthcare providers and surgical implant manufacturers stay in sync about the timing and materials for upcoming surgeries, helping coordinate resources such as implants, trays, clinicians, and support staff. (Future)

When we heard about Aura, Epic’s network to exchange data with our specialty diagnostic lab partners in a way that’s similar to Epic’s interoperability network Care Everywhere, I knew right away that this was a better way to do it. Aura makes it possible to make these connections at scale with highly complex genomic data. We never would have had this many labs live at this point without it. We’ve also joined a great collaborative community. We’re all using the same software, and Epic is helping us mediate the technical connections. That’s big.

Actionable, Accessible Genetic Data Makes Personalized Medicine Possible
TriHealth patients undergoing cancer treatment receive the benefits of precision medicine because clinicians can easily order and use genomic tests. Central to their efforts is the integration of their Tempus testing workflows with Epic. Tempus, based in Chicago, offers providers comprehensive precision oncology testing that can be ordered from the EHR to help them understand the molecular drivers of a patient’s cancer and consider biomarker-driven therapy or clinical trials. In just one year, treatment plans for more than 760 patients have been updated with personalized recommendations.

Texas Children’s Hospital quadrupled overall enrollment and increased participation among families of color in the SPARK autism study in the year after implementing an advisory that encouraged providers to talk to patients about the study.

Yale New Haven Health (YNHH) made participation in clinical trials more accessible by hosting research profiles in MyChart and reaching out directly to patients who could be candidates for specific studies. This approach has helped YNHH achieve more equitable racial representation, with 30% of study participants identifying as non-White.

Cleveland Clinic accelerated recruitment for the Cleveland Clinic BioRepository 20-fold while reducing costs 5-fold by using Epic for subject identification, electronic consenting, and automatic phenotyping. The response rate to MyChart recruitment messages was 7.8%, and respondents were more diverse compared to traditional outreach methods: 18% of enrolled research subjects were under-represented minorities.
